JOB SUMMARY
The Animal Shelter Assistant provides daily care for dogs, cats and other animals in the shelter. The position provides excellent customer service with surrenders, strays and adoptions. Assists with maintaining a clean and sanitized shelter at all times.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Provides basic care for animals kept in the County animal shelter in compliance with all applicable rules, regulation and procedures.
- Cleans and maintains safe and sanitary conditions in the animal shelter.
- Bathes, grooms and exercises animals as needed.
- Assists with administering medication as needed.
- Monitors and records the behaviors and conditions of the animals.
- Greets visitors and assists individuals at front counter; shows shelter animals to visitors; processes adoptions and reclaims of animals; prepares, files, and maintains official adoption documentation.
- Provides information and assistance to visitors within the scope of authority; assists customers with applications and forms; explains County policies and procedures.
- Processes and files paperwork; maintains records, document logs and filing system.
- Follows safety procedures, utilizes safety equipment, and monitors work environment to ensure safety of animals and other individuals.
- Requires regular and prompt attendance plus the ability to work well with others and work well as a team.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience
- Passion for animal welfare and experience working with animals in a shelter or rescue environment.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to educate and engage the public about animal care and adoption.
- High school diploma or equivalent (preferred).
Licenses or Certifications:
- Must possess a valid State of Alabama driver’s license and a driving record suitable for insurability.
- Certification in animal care or a related field (preferred).

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of animal control regulations, techniques, and enforcement.
- Knowledge of the techniques of safe handling and maintaining the general welfare of animals.
- Knowledge of the principles of communication.
- Knowledge of modern office practices, procedures, and equipment.
- Knowledge of the work hazards associated with animal control.
- Ability to learn characteristics of animal behavior (for example: the ability to identify aggressive or fearful behavior).
- Ability to work independently while contributing to a collaborative team environment.
- Ability to read, understand, and interpret codes, laws, regulations, policies, and procedures of animal collection, impoundment, quarantine, and disposal.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public, public officials, and employees.
- Ability to deal with citizens in a courteous and pleasant manner.
- Ability to feed, care for, and assist in the transport domestic and non-domestic animals.
- Ability to establish and maintain a variety of records.
- Ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
- Ability to operate, maneuver, and/or control the actions of equipment, machinery, tools, and/or materials used in performing essential functions.

Work is performed in a dynamic environment that requires sensitivity to change and responsiveness to changing goals, priorities, and needs. Work may be performed outside in a hazardous work environment with exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, temperature extremes, bright/dim light, animal bites, or rude/hostile citizens.
