The Marshall County Personnel Board is currently accepting applications for an Equipment Operator III position.  The individual chosen for this position will perform a variety of duties, which would involve the operation of a wide variety of heavy equipment such as a motor grader, bulldozer, front-end loader, crane, scraper, roller, etc.in the performance of assigned complex construction and maintenance activities.  May direct the work of others in accomplishing specific tasks while operating equipment.  Perform routine maintenance.  Incumbents may be called in to assist in clearing trees, brush, debris, and other hazards during emergencies, both during and after regular business hours.            

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
 
A.  Operate a wide variety of heavy equipment to accomplish assigned construction and maintenance tasks:
 
  1. Operate motor grader to perform complex finishing and grading operations.
  2. Perform the full range of operations with equipment such as bulldozer, gradall, front-end loader, scraper, roller, chip spreader, asphalt distributor, tractor-trailer, power shovel, backhoe, crane and other types of heavy equipment.
  3. Operate a soil pan for earth moving and rough grading.
  4. Operate a backhoe or gradall in digging ditches, digging roots, digging trenches and setting pipe, and placing bridge timbers.
  5. Operate other equipment such as light and heavy dump truck and light tractor.
  6. Load and haul heavy equipment and machinery on low-boy truck and trailer or other appropriate truck and trailer combinations.
  7. Direct the work of other personnel in complex construction and maintenance projects.
           
B.   Conduct safety inspection, perform routine maintenance, and may assist with repairs to equipment:
  1. Check oil, fluid levels, and make other inspections in accordance with established procedures prior to operating equipment.
  2. Monitor gages and other indicators for nonstandard conditions while equipment is in operation.
  3. Notify supervisor of any mechanical or safety problems encountered.
  4. Change oil, other fluids, and filters as needed.
  5. Perform mechanical repairs, such as, engine tuning, and ignition, fuel, brake, and   hydraulic system repair and overhaul.
 
C.   Assist in the removal of trees, bushes, debris, etc.: 
  1. Assist in removing trees, bushes, and brush from rights-of-way using chain saw, ax, bush blade, etc.
  2. Clear debris from bridge culverts and drain pipes, as needed.
  3. Act as flag-man as needed.
 
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
 
  • Knowledge of standard practices and procedures for maintenance and repair of heavy trucks and equipment.
  • Knowledge of operation and repair of diesel engines.
  • Knowledge of safe driving and traffic rules and practices.
  • Knowledge of the job hazards and appropriate safety precautions and equipment to maintain a safe work environment.
  • Knowledge of the operation and preventive maintenance of various types of trucks and heavy equipment.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to direct others in the accomplishment of complex road construction and maintenance tasks.
  • Ability to communicate information to supervisors and co-workers.
  • Ability to perform tasks requiring strength and endurance, such as operating heavy equipment, clearing brush and debris, etc.
  • Ability to operate light and heavy trucks and other heavy equipment in a safe manner, and in accordance with traffic laws and ordinances.
  • Ability to diagnose and repair a wide variety of vehicles and equipment used in road maintenance and construction.
  • Skilled in the operation of heavy equipment used in the construction and maintenance of roads.
  
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
 
  • Two (2) years of experience in operating heavy equipment
  • Must possess a valid State of Alabama driver’s license with a Class “A” CDL designation and a driving record suitable for insurability.
